M7–M12 Interchange project under construction in Western Sydney, showing new bridge ramps, roadworks, and motorway upgrades.

The M7-M12 Integration Project is a major upgrade transforming how Western Sydney connects, linking the M7 Motorway to the new M12 motorway Sydney through the purpose-built M7-M12 Interchange — strengthening mobility across one of Australia’s fastest-growing regions.

Project Overview

The M7-M12 Integration project is a major infrastructure upgrade delivered under the Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan as part of broader Transport for NSW projects. This project widens the M7 Motorway and introduces the new M7-M12 Integration project, creating a seamless link to the M12 motorway Sydney and improving access to the Western Sydney International Airport and surrounding growth precincts.

Delivered by John Holland for WSO Co in partnership with Transport for NSW, the project spans 26 kilometres between Prestons and Oakhurst. It includes extensive bridge works, drainage upgrades, and enhancements to the M7 cycleway to improve safety and support growing demand for active transport.

Scheduled for completion in 2026, the project plays a critical role in strengthening Western Sydney’s transport network, improving travel times, and unlocking long-term economic potential.

The Problem

Before the upgrade commenced, the M7 corridor faced several challenges:

  • Heavy congestion during peak hours, impacting freight efficiency
  • Limited capacity across 41 existing bridge structures
  • No high-capacity connection to the M12 motorway sydney
  • Ageing pavement and drainage requiring significant renewal
  • Disruptions affecting the M7 cycleway during major works

These limitations reduced reliability, increased delays, and constrained the region’s future growth.

Project Goals

Supporting the Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan

The M7–M12 Interchange creates a direct, high-capacity link between the M7 and M12. This connection enhances network efficiency across Western Sydney.

  • Deliver a safer, more reliable motorway connection between the M7 and M12
  • Improve access to the Western Sydney International Airport
  • Enhance freight movement across one of Sydney’s busiest freight corridors
  • Improve long-term pavement and structural durability
  • Maintain continuous accessibility along the m7 cycleway
  • Support sustainable, future-proof transport outcomes for Western Sydney

Construction Scope

The M7-M12 interchange and associated motorway works include:

  • Adding an additional lane in each direction for approximately 26 km
  • Constructing the new M7–M12 Interchange using incrementally launched box girder bridges
  • Widening or upgrading 41 bridges and constructing 7 new structures
  • Installing 23 retaining walls and 9 pier protection systems
  • Realigning Elizabeth Drive and constructing five new signalised intersections
  • Upgrading ITS, lighting, drainage, and noise mitigation systems
  • Extending the shared user path (SUP) bridge while maintaining safe access to the M7 cycleway
