How to Install Connolly Expansion Joints

  1. If permanent capping or a rebate mould is used, ensure it is pushed firmly onto the top of the system before placement.
  2. Position the expansion joint profile in the desired location and drive in the supplied pegs. Make sure the top of the peg sits at least 20 mm below the intended finished concrete level.
  3. Adjust the profile to the correct height and secure it by tapping in the supplied wedges.
  4. Insert dowels into the Universal Dowel Sleeves (UDS) by pressing each dowel fully to the end of the sleeve.
  5. Install the Universal Dowel Sleeve in the profile by pushing the dowel through the foam at the centre of the pre-punched holes, then twist the sleeve 90° to lock it in place.
  6. Place reinforcement and pour concrete evenly on both sides of the expansion joint. Finish the surface and ensure the top of the joint remains clear of excess concrete.
  7. Pull out the top profile and apply sealant as per manufacturer specifications.

Note: This step is only required when a rebate mould is used.

Frequently Asked Questions:

A concrete expansion joint is a gap or space, typically filled with a compressible material, that separates concrete slabs to allow for expansion and contraction. As concrete heats up, it expands, and without a buffer, it would crack under pressure. Expansion joints absorb the stress caused by these movements, protecting the integrity of the structure and allowing the slabs to move without causing damage.

Expansion joints are essential in construction because they prevent concrete from cracking as it naturally expands and contracts due to temperature fluctuations or structural loads. Without them, rigid concrete slabs could press against each other or surrounding structures, leading to fractures, buckling, or serious structural damage. Expansion joints also help reduce long-term maintenance costs by preventing cracks and ensuring the durability of the concrete.

Expansion joints are made from a variety of materials depending on the project’s needs. Common materials include rubber, plastic, foam, and metal. Each material is chosen for its ability to withstand the environmental conditions and stresses of the structure. For example, this Connolly Expansion Joint uses high-grade materials designed to resist moisture, corrosion, and heavy loads, ensuring they maintain performance even in harsh environments like bridges or industrial floors.

Connolly Expansion Joints are known for their high-quality design and precision engineering, setting them apart from other brands. These joints meet rigorous Australian construction standards, ensuring their durability in various applications such as infrastructure, commercial, and industrial projects. Additionally, they are designed for ease of installation, reducing on-site labour costs and project timelines. Their focus on sustainability further ensures that these joints support greener construction practices, minimizing the need for frequent repairs.

Expansion joints should be installed during the initial concrete pouring phase or immediately after the concrete has been laid. Installing them at the right stage ensures the concrete can expand and contract properly as it cures and experiences temperature changes. Failing to install expansion joints at the right time can lead to uncontrolled cracking or damage to the concrete, potentially causing structural issues down the line. Properly planning the installation phase is critical for the joints to perform their intended function.

Expansion joints should be inspected at least once a year or more frequently if they are installed in high-traffic areas or exposed to harsh environmental conditions. Regular inspections ensure that the joints are functioning as expected, without signs of wear, shifting, or damage. By identifying issues early, maintenance teams can address any potential problems before they escalate, reducing the need for costly repairs and ensuring the long-term durability of the concrete structure.

Without expansion joints, concrete slabs are likely to crack or become damaged due to natural movement caused by temperature changes, settling, or heavy loads. When concrete expands and has no room to move, it creates internal pressure, which can cause severe cracking or buckling, compromising the structural integrity of the project. This can lead to costly repairs or even structural failure, which is especially problematic for infrastructure like roads, bridges, and industrial floors. Connolly Expansion Joints are specifically designed to prevent these issues, ensuring that concrete can expand and contract safely.

The lifespan of expansion joints depends on several factors, such as the materials used, the environmental conditions, and the amount of traffic or load they bear. Connolly Expansion Joints, for example, are made from high-grade materials that are resistant to wear, corrosion, and environmental stress, which ensures they last longer even in tough conditions. With proper maintenance and regular inspections, expansion joints can last for decades, minimizing the need for replacement and reducing long-term maintenance costs.

In many cases, expansion joints do require sealing, especially in areas exposed to water, chemicals, or debris. Sealing expansion joints prevents materials like dirt, water, and debris from entering the joint and causing damage or hindering movement. The type of sealant used depends on the project and the environmental conditions. For example, in outdoor applications such as roads or bridges, waterproof sealants are used to prevent water from entering and freezing, which could cause the joints to deteriorate or fail.

When selecting an expansion joint, several factors need to be considered, including the type of project, the anticipated movement, load conditions, and environmental exposure. The material of the joint must be durable enough to handle the expected movement and load while also withstanding environmental factors like moisture, temperature extremes, or chemical exposure. Connolly Expansion Joints offer a range of sizes and materials that cater to different construction requirements, from heavy-load industrial floors to high-traffic roadways, ensuring the best performance for your specific project. Compliance with building standards and ease of installation should also be key considerations in the selection process.
